Default Info on Corvettes appreciated

Hello. I`m not one to post around in the main forum as I am usually on the sim-racing discussion section. Being from New-Brunswick, there`s only 1 track and that would be Shoubenacadie that is a 4h drive from me.

I`ve dreamed of Corvettes all my life(even though I am still pretty young) and I think it could be possible now to own a great 2nd hand Corvette.

A dealer in Moncton has a few and they are open to offers. There is a 2002 Z06 with 50 000 km, has an intake, exhaust, and a chip they say. They want 32000 for it.

They also have an 04 with a bit less km with an intake and I think there is an exhaust for 36000.

What do you fellow Corvette owners think of these and what would be a good offer for either one of them. I`d probably hit the drag strip from time to time and head down to Shubenacadie once or twice a year.

Also I don`t think I`ve seen many problems with these cars. I`ve heard of some with great mileage and very little problems. Just want to be sure.

Thanks everyone.

Hi Kevin. Looks like you are looking for a C5.
As you know you have lots of options in this category.
There are no bad choices.
There are lots of variables to consider. Do you want to be able to drive with the roof off or down? Do you want to track the car. Are you looking for raw HP or a mix of cruising an go fast ability?
The Z06's you mentioned are priced a bit high for todays market. The Z06 is by far the hot rod of the fleet.
Check pricing and availability on the numerous Corvette forms.
As for gas mileage, these things will get in the mid 30's on the highway.
They are pretty reliable and if problems do arise, they are a Chevy and parts are quite reasonable for a true sports car.
Good Luck in your hunt.

Thanks. I'll be looking around more. I've been obsessed with the Z06 for a long time. I also hate convertibles, so the soft tops are out of the question . It's more or less to cruise around, but I would really like to do track days and autocross with it as much as possible, but there isn't much of that around here.

Great choice.
There are quite a few out there if you don't mind traveling to get it.

Devils advocate:

Have you checked into the cost of insurance,23 with a clean record is on average 4,000 dollars per year(data found on Kanetix.ca) .This couple of trips to the track could get expensive,,,,,

As a 2nd car it would be 1500$. I checked with my sentra and the corvette as a 2nd car and it was 2873$ per year for both at td insurance.

Zedders sounds good, but still a tad too much. I found some in the states that are lower priced, but then it's the cost of getting it licensed and brought here that I am not sure of. I was thinking of maybe making an offer of 29000$ on the road for that 2002 in Moncton. From what I saw on trader.ca, it would be lower then most, but if they are looking to get rid of it, I might be ok. My biggest worry is the chip and no warranty. I guess I'll have to try and find out if it's just the 1st to 4th gear lock or speed limiter of really a performance chip.

Be VERY leery of the 'performance chip' claim, there is no such thing on a C5 Corvette. Tuning's all done with a Tech2 unit or a laptop and some software like LS1Edit and a few others out there that come with the cable to connect to the onboard computer.
You have the right idea on the hardtop if you plan on some track days. Most organizers require any verts to have a roll bar installed.
Also pay attention to what they mean by 'exhaust system', it's probably a cat back so you'll be wanting some long tube headers and a decent X pipe on it before long. Trust me. I swear to God I'm gonna stop tweaking my 99. Yeah, right.
Just make sure the recalls are taken care of. Biggies if I recall right are the seat belt retractors, the steering lock and the driver's side diff seal that was prone to leak until they re-engineered it.
There's an 04 in Vancouver on Craigslist for 26,500 right now, didn't look at the miles though.
